SPRING HILL, Fla. — Two drivers were arrested Friday night after deputies caught them racing side-by-side on Spring Hill Drive, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit spotted two vehicles accelerating rapidly near Deering Avenue on July 18. Radar equipment confirmed both vehicles were traveling 73 mph in a posted 45 mph zone.
Deputies arrested and charged Gus Panos, 22, and Kyle Eicher, 18, with racing on a highway, a violation of Florida law.
Following the arrests, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement emphasizing the danger street racing poses to the public.
“Street racing is not just illegal—it puts innocent motorists, pedestrians, and families at serious risk,” the agency said. “A split-second decision to race on a public roadway can have life-changing or even fatal consequences. Take it to the track—not our streets.”
The department added that its Traffic Unit will continue targeting reckless driving behaviors across the county.
“If you choose to race on Hernando County roadways, expect to be stopped, cited, or arrested,” the statement said. “Our Traffic Unit remains committed to aggressively enforcing dangerous driving behaviors to keep our roads safe for everyone. Slow down. Drive responsibly. Arrive alive.”
