SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — A two-vehicle collision on Interstate 75 southbound left both a van and a semi-truck overturned on the shoulder Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 10:28 a.m. near mile marker 174 in Sarasota County.
Investigators said a 2007 Ford Van, driven by a 62-year-old Tampa man with a 48-year-old female passenger, was traveling south in the right lane of I-75 below the minimum speed limit.
A 2010 Freightliner cab pulling a trailer, driven by a 46-year-old Miami man, was traveling directly behind the van. As the van continued to slow down, the semi-truck was unable to stop in time, striking the rear of the van.
The impact forced the van off the right side of the road, where it overturned on the grassy shoulder and came to rest on its roof facing south.
After the initial collision, the semi-truck also exited the roadway to the right, rotated clockwise, and flipped onto its left side in the grass, stopping in a southbound direction.
State Trooper J. Flow is investigating the incident. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the crash remains under investigation.
