Twenty Israeli hostages are back on Israeli territory, freed after two years in Hamas custody, marking the successful first phase of a landmark ceasefire agreement between Israel and the militant group.
The return of the survivors, who were taken during the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel, brings a measure of relief to a nation gripped by the prolonged crisis.
The deal’s terms also stipulate the transfer of the remains of 28 other hostages. In exchange for the hostages and their remains, Hamas is set to receive 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Palestinians detained following the October 7th attacks.
Hostages Face Long-Term Recovery
While the return is a cause for celebration, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum’s health team has cautioned that the former captives and their families face a difficult journey ahead.
The full scope of their injuries is unknown, but they will require extensive medical, psychological, and social rehabilitation to restore their health and “their identity as people.” Similar long-term support is also stressed for the families of the deceased hostages.

Trump Hails ‘Historic Dawn’ in Knesset Address
The hostage release coincides with a high-profile diplomatic visit from President Donald Trump, who arrived in Israel to a warm welcome from top leadership, including President Herzog and Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Addressing a standing-ovation-filled session of the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), Trump heralded a new era of peace.
His prereleased remarks declared: “After so many years of unceasing war and endless danger, today, the skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still, and the sun rises on a Holy Land that is finally at peace.”

The President called the agreement a “historic dawn of a new Middle East,” highlighting the breakthrough in regional stability.
Later in the day, President Trump is scheduled to join a pivotal Middle East peace summit in Egypt. Hosted alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi, the summit will feature the formal signing ceremony of the ceasefire deal, led by the U.S., Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
Twenty heads of state, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, are expected to be in attendance.
