President Trump significantly widened the net of U.S. travel restrictions on Tuesday, signing a proclamation that nearly doubles the number of countries facing entry barriers. The list now encompasses 39 nations, a sharp increase from the previous 19.

The White House framed the decision as a necessary response to national security gaps, stating that the newly added nations exhibit “severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing.”

This expansion marks the latest step in the administration’s intensified focus on immigration and border security.

The push for tighter controls gained renewed urgency following a violent incident in November, where a shooting in Washington, D.C., left one National Guard member dead and another in critical condition.

That tragedy has been cited by the administration as a key driver for these heightened vetting protocols.
