House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) dismissed criticism from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Friday, who accused him of “hypocrisy” regarding a fellow Republican facing allegations of misconduct.
“I try not to react to what Marjorie Taylor Greene says every day,” Johnson told reporters at a press conference. “I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
Greene’s latest comments, delivered in a Thursday interview with Axios, centered on her frustration with the Speaker’s handling of the situation involving Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL). RELATED: Florida Judge Issues Protective Order Against Rep. Cory Mills After Ex-Girlfriend’s Threat Claims
Mills was recently issued a restraining order after his former girlfriend, Lindsay Langston, accused him of threatening to release sexually explicit photos following their breakup. Mills has denied any wrongdoing.
Greene contrasted the situation with the 2023 expulsion of former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), stating, “They expelled George Santos, Mike Johnson did. He was speaker and oversaw George Santos being expelled. Why isn’t he doing anything about Cory Mills?”
She added that “there’s clearly proof behind [Langston’s] accusations that a judge is issuing a restraining order,” telling Axios, “I would say to Speaker Johnson, this is a serious matter, and it needs to be taken seriously.”
During his press conference, Speaker Johnson sought to clarify his role in the Santos expulsion, stating he did not vote to expel the New York lawmaker. Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023 after being found to have misused thousands of dollars in campaign funds for personal items, including Botox treatments and a subscription to an adult website.
At the time of his expulsion, Santos had not been convicted of a crime, though he later pleaded guilty to identity theft and wire fraud. Known as a conservative firebrand, Greene has recently been outspoken in her criticism of her own party, particularly regarding the ongoing government funding situation.
Her willingness to challenge fellow Republicans has drawn unexpected praise, including from some prominent Democrats like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who called her one of the “decent, honest Republicans.”
However, she continues to direct sharp criticism at Democrats as well, recently targeting them over the 2010 passage of the Affordable Care Act.
