The United States military has launched targeted military strikes against Iranian positions following the downing of an American helicopter near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command announced Tuesday that the operation is actively underway, characterizing the strikes as “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.”
The military intervention follows conflicting reports regarding how the U.S. Army Apache helicopter went down off the coast of Oman on Monday night. U.S. President Donald Trump placed direct blame on Iranian forces, stating the aircraft was shot down.
“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump posted on social media Tuesday. “There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
However, an anonymous U.S. official commenting on the ongoing investigation stated that the helicopter went down after colliding with an Iranian drone.
While major media networks, including CNN and CBS News, previously reported on this drone collision, official military statements maintain that the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined if the collision was an intentional act.
In response to the newly initiated U.S. combat operations, Iranian state media reported hearing large explosions on an Iranian island located directly within the Strait of Hormuz.
Geopolitical tensions inside the geographic corridor had already reached a boiling point prior to the American strikes. Iran’s top diplomat issued a stark warning regarding the presence of international troops in the region, declaring that foreign military forces operating near Iranian territory “are at constant risk.”
U.S. military officials have not provided details on specific targets or an expected timeline for the ongoing operation. Iranian authorities have yet to issue a formal diplomatic statement regarding the U.S. strikes.
