U.S. Marshals: Massive Tennessee Dragnet Snags Murder Suspects As Task Force Clears 50 Arrests

Law enforcement officers flooded Memphis streets on Thursday, resulting in 50 arrests and the recovery of three illegal firearms in a single-day push by the Memphis Safe Task Force (MSTF). The sweep, which included the apprehension of one juvenile, targeted individuals with active warrants for violent offenses across the city.

Two high-profile arrests anchored the day’s operations. In the 2600 block of Durby Circle, officers took 21-year-old Katruan Phillips into custody.

Phillips, identified by authorities as a suspected gang member, was wanted on several charges, including attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, and various firearm and drug distribution counts. Police seized a weapon during his arrest.

A second major arrest occurred on Scottsdale Avenue, where MSTF members tracked down 21-year-old Nelson Sanford. Sanford was wanted for first-degree murder.

According to officials, the task force surrounded the residence and performed a “call out,” leading Sanford to surrender without incident. Inside the home, investigators found a .40-caliber handgun equipped with a “switch” (a device that allows for fully automatic fire), along with ammunition and marijuana.

Despite the high volume of arrests, a major manhunt continues for 40-year-old Danell Maxwell. The MSTF and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have pooled resources to offer a $32,500 reward for information leading to his capture.

Maxwell is wanted for the attempted first-degree murder of a Memphis Police officer during a February 27 traffic stop. Described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds, Maxwell was last seen in dark clothing and a reflective orange and green vest. Authorities warn that he is considered armed and dangerous.

The MSTF has maintained an aggressive pace since its launch in September 2025. The multi-agency initiative—which brings together local and state police, federal agents, and the Tennessee National Guard—was designed to curb a spike in violent crime.

To date, the collaboration has resulted in 7,574 total arrests, including 45 for homicide and 664 for firearms violations. Beyond enforcement, the task force has successfully located 150 missing children.

Officials stated that these ongoing operations are part of a coordinated effort to hold violent offenders accountable and remove illegal weapons from the community. Members of the public with information regarding wanted fugitives are being directed to submit tips through the USMS Tips mobile application.
