Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated Sunday that the U.S. is “prepared to increase pressure on Russia” through new sanctions. He confirmed that discussions are underway with European Union officials, including a recent call between President Trump and E.U. President Ursula von der Leyen.

The comments were made this morning during an interview with Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press, following a high-stakes aerial attack on Kyiv by Russian forces. Welker noted that the attack was the largest of its kind since the war began, causing NATO to scramble jets.

During the interview, Secretary Bessent emphasized the critical nature of a unified U.S. and E.U. approach to the situation. “We are in a race now between how long can the Ukrainian military hold up, versus how long can the Russian economy hold up?” he said.

Bessent underscored that a coordinated strategy is the key to bringing Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.

He explained, “If the U.S. and the E.U. can come in, do more sanctions, secondary tariffs on the countries that buy Russian oil, the Russian economy will be in full collapse and that will bring President Putin to the table.”

The Secretary’s meeting with key European economic officials on Monday is expected to further these discussions and coordinate the next steps in the international response to Russia’s aggression.
