State Department Highlights Interagency Success, Calls for Global Responsibility in Addressing Humanitarian Crisis
The United States last week successfully repatriated a U.S. citizen minor from a displaced persons camp in northeast Syria, reuniting the child with their family. The operation, detailed in a note released by the State Department today, underscores ongoing U.S. efforts to bring home its citizens from the region and highlights a broader call for international cooperation.
According to the State Department, the repatriation was a collaborative effort, with sincere thanks extended to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Department of Defense for their crucial assistance.

“Our interagency efforts have given this child, who has known nothing of life outside of the camps, a future free from the influence and dangers of ISIS terrorism,” the State Department note stated.
The successful repatriation brings renewed focus to the dire situation in northeast Syria, where approximately 30,000 individuals from over 70 countries remain in two displaced persons camps.
The vast majority of these individuals are children under the age of 12. The State Department emphasized, “They deserve a chance at life outside the camps.”

The State Department asserts that the only sustainable solution to the humanitarian and security crisis in these camps is for countries of origin to take responsibility for their nationals.
This includes not only repatriation but also rehabilitation, reintegration, and, where appropriate, ensuring accountability for their actions. The call to action extends to former ISIS fighters held in detention centers in the region.
