UF Health officials gathered Thursday to mark the grand opening of the UF Health Orthopaedic Surgical Center, a new 24,000-square-foot facility built to streamline outpatient bone and joint procedures. Located in Gainesville, the center focuses on same-day surgeries, moving specialized care away from a traditional hospital setting to a more accessible, dedicated environment.

The facility launched with a series of advanced operating suites designed for flexibility, allowing surgeons to tailor the space to specific patient needs. The infrastructure is also prepped for future expansion, with the capacity to add more suites as local demand grows.

To manage patient traffic, the layout includes 11 pre-operation bays and 11 post-operation recovery bays, a setup intended to create a seamless flow from check-in to discharge.

“The heart of what we do here is getting you back to your life,” said Michael D. Holmes, M.S.A., UF Health senior vice president and Greater Gainesville regional president. “This center reflects our longstanding commitment to providing exceptional, compassionate care, a responsibility we have embraced since our orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine program began back in 1960.”

The clinical team at the new center provides the same level of care used by the Florida Gators and Team USA athletes. Since 2023, UF Health has operated as a national medical center within the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Medical Network.

The new building aims to bring that high-level technical expertise to the general public in a way that feels less clinical and more manageable.

C. Parker Gibbs Jr., M.D., chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in the UF College of Medicine, noted that the facility pairs highly skilled surgeons with the latest medical technology. “The UF Health Orthopaedic Surgical Center represents the very best of what orthopaedic medicine can achieve,” Gibbs said during the event.

The project emphasizes safety and convenience, aiming to reduce the stress often associated with surgical visits. By specializing strictly in orthopaedics, the center minimizes the logistical hurdles found in larger, multi-specialty hospitals.

“We know that when you or a loved one needs surgery, the experience can feel overwhelming,” Holmes said. “We’ve built this for our neighbors, ensuring that world-class surgical care is available right here in a way that’s easier for both patients and providers.”
