The University of California (UC) announced on Tuesday that it has reached a significant settlement in the case of Frankel v. Regents of the University of California. The lawsuit stemmed from claims related to UCLA’s initial response to protest activity in 2024, which had raised concerns about antisemitism on campus.

The agreement signifies a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism within the UC system. “We are pleased with the terms of today’s settlement. The injunction and other terms UCLA has agreed to demonstrate real progress in the fight against antisemitism,” the parties said in a joint statement.

As part of the settlement, UCLA will continue to implement and strengthen policies aimed at fostering a safer environment for its Jewish students, faculty, and staff. Beyond these policy commitments, the University of California will make a substantial financial contribution of $2.33 million to eight organizations dedicated to fighting antisemitism and supporting the Jewish community at UCLA.

These organizations include prominent groups such as Hillel at UCLA, the Academic Engagement Network, the Anti-Defamation League, and the Jewish Federation Los Angeles’s Campus Impact Network.

Accordign to a press release, $320,000 of the settlement funds will be allocated to UCLA’s Initiative to Combat Antisemitism. This initiative, launched in March by UCLA Chancellor Dr. Julio Frenk, aims to mobilize resources and leadership across the university to comprehensively address antisemitism.

This settlement builds upon existing systemwide reforms and programs previously instituted by the University of California to combat antisemitism.

“Antisemitism, harassment, and other forms of intimidation are antithetical to our values and have no place at the University of California,” stated University of California Board of Regents Chair Janet Reilly. “We have been clear about where we have fallen short, and we are committed to doing better moving forward. Today’s settlement reflects a critically important goal that we share with the plaintiffs: to foster a safe, secure and inclusive environment for all members of our community and ensure that there is no room for antisemitism anywhere on campus.”

Reilly emphasized the university’s dedication to cultivating an environment where all members of its community can learn and thrive safely, regardless of their background or beliefs. The settlement marks a pivotal moment for the UC system as it continues to address and mitigate issues of antisemitism on its campuses.
