Tragedy struck the University of Georgia community as one of their students was critically injured in the New Orleans terror attack on New Year’s Eve. The student, who remains unidentified, is currently hospitalized.
University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead confirmed the news in a statement on social media, expressing his condolences to all those affected by the “terrible tragedy.” He also shared that he had spoken with the student’s family to offer support and well wishes on behalf of the university.

The attack, which took place around 3:15 AM in the French Quarter, involved a driver plowing a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians before engaging in a shootout with police. At least 15 people were killed and 35 injured in the incident.
The Sugar Bowl, which was scheduled to be played between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame on New Year’s Eve, has been postponed to Thursday due to the attack.

University officials confirmed that all members of the Georgia Bulldogs football team and official travel party are safe and accounted for. The UGA Athletic Association expressed their condolences and stated they are in contact with local law enforcement and Sugar Bowl representatives to gather more information.
The suspect in the attack has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. He was killed in the shootout with police. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
