General Michael “Erik” Kurilla, commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), conducted a whirlwind tour of Syria and Iraq today, focusing on the evolving security situation and the ongoing fight against ISIS.
In Syria, General Kurilla met with US military commanders, service members, and their partners in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). He assessed force protection measures and the dynamic situation on the ground, emphasizing the continued commitment to preventing an ISIS resurgence.

Following his visit to Syria, General Kurilla traveled to Baghdad where he engaged in high-level discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al Sudani, Chief of Staff General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, and Iraqi Joint Operations Deputy Commander General Qais al-Muhammadawai.
These meetings centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional security, particularly in light of the rapidly changing situation in Syria. The leaders also addressed ongoing counter-ISIS operations in Iraq and the continued partnership between Coalition and Iraqi forces.

General Kurilla also met with Major General Kevin Leahy, Commander of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), to assess the counter-ISIS mission in both Iraq and Syria.
“We remain dedicated to the enduring defeat of ISIS and committed to the security of our partners that neighbor Syria – including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel,” said Gen. Kurilla.
This visit comes at a crucial time for the region, with instability in Syria posing potential challenges to security in neighboring countries. General Kurilla’s engagements underscore the US commitment to maintaining stability and countering the threat of ISIS in the region.
