The United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes inside Iran on Sunday following a trajectory of Iranian missiles fired toward Jordan that threatened to draw neighboring Israel directly into the conflict.
U.S. Central Command confirmed that the latest round of strikes targeted Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard to retaliate for the Friday attack on a base in Jordan that killed two American service members and left one missing.
According to the military’s statement, Sunday’s operation hit “Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities and missile and drone storage sites.” Central Command stated the mission was explicitly designed to degrade Tehran’s ability to control the Strait of Hormuz and to “swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces,” the key power base controlling Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal.
The renewed exchange of direct fire has further reignited the conflict between the United States and Iran, following the collapse of an interim peace deal signed about a month ago that had sought to permanently end the war.
The broader military campaign, now entering its second week, originally began as a struggle over control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz maritime shipping lane. Over the course of the week, the U.S. has targeted Iranian bridges, electrical facilities, and other infrastructure, while Tehran has retaliated by striking U.S.-allied nations throughout the Middle East.
Air defenses were reactivated Sunday morning across Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain as regional authorities issued warnings of incoming Iranian drones and missiles. In tandem, Israel issued a formal warning stating that Iranian missiles launched toward neighboring Jordan risked causing the conflict to spill over into Israeli territory for the first time since active fighting restarted.
The escalation follows earlier strikes over the weekend, where Iranian projectiles forced a temporary suspension of operations at Kuwait International Airport and struck a Kuwaiti oil facility and power station.
Tehran had also claimed hits on U.S. aircraft hangars in Bahrain and announced operations targeting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz—including claims of causing explosions on two oil tankers, an account the U.S. military denied. Iran has previously accused the U.S. of hitting its civilian infrastructure, including a desalination plant in Jask County that left 10,000 residents without water, amid ongoing calls for restraint from the United Nations.
Prior to the latest U.S. strikes, Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a statement read on state television warning the U.S. of “unforgettable lessons” if attacks continued.
Khamenei also characterized U.S. President Donald Trump’s signature as “worthless and invalid” following an announcement by Iranian negotiators that Tehran was suspending its commitments to the recent interim deal.
