U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz believes that Republicans, if they retake the majority in Congress next year, should make every committee an investigative committee.
In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News at the Turning Point USA AmericaFest conference in Phoenix, the Florida Republican said that the “weaponization” of the Justice Department, particularly of parents at school board meetings, is the most “dangerous” challenge confronting the country.
“I believe Republicans are going to re-take the majority, and I want to make sure we’re worthy of it, and that we have a plan and a strategy. So I would convert every committee in the Congress to an oversight committee,” said Gaetz.
“I think every committee has an investigation they should be running.”
“This is a stark contrast to the [former GOP Speaker] Paul Ryan vision of a Republican majority with a Democrat president,” Gaetz added.
“In the Ryan years, they would pass all these bills, they would get [former President Barack] Obama to veto them, and then they would claim that as some sort of moral victory. And then when we got power, and we had [former President Donald] Trump in the White House — they wouldn’t put the same bills on Trump’s desk.”
“So,” Gaetz continued, “I don’t want to go through the performative legislative practice. [President] Joe Biden’s not going to sign any bill of consequence that we’d pass, and the Senate wouldn’t take it up anyway. So why not use the committee process to expose the truth to the American people, and how these terrible choices the Biden administration is making is actually making their lives worse.”
Gaetz said if the Republicans sweep in 2022, as some polls indicate they will, he believes the party should pick committee chairmen who will pursue “dogged” inquiries of wrongdoing, and not base that position on seniority or who can raise the most money for leadership.
As examples, Gaetz said the Education Committee should look into the payments the University of Pennsylvania made to Biden when it made him a “professor,” who didn’t actually teach. The Armed Services Committee would probe the politics of vaccine mandates that have forced hundreds of troops out of the military, as well as the claims of “white supremacy” in the ranks.
The committee over health care would investigate the origin of the COVID-19 lab-leak theory.
“I’m on the Judiciary Committee, (and) I think nothing is more dangerous right now than the weaponization of the Justice Department against people who show up at school board meetings because that paves the way for such a broad targeting, the likes of which we’ve never seen before,” he said. “That’s what I’d like to run.”
“Literally every committee – there has to be an approach like that,” said Gaetz.
But, Gaetz said, Republicans cannot clean up their own house until the GOP leadership is jarred by the “populism” of the conservative base.
“Folks want people who will battle for them,” he concluded. “Most of them [liberals] want to destroy most of us, and it’s choose-your-fighter time. We need more fighters in Congress. … This is still a country worth all the fight we have.”
