US Sen. Rubio Objects To Biden Defender Of Partial-Birth Abortion, Saying His Views Promote Infanticide

Jon Gruden was essentially fired as the Las Vegas Raiders coach over decade-old, politically incorrect emails. Conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was politically crucified over things he reportedly said in high school. South Florida Republican Congressman Brian Mast was attacked last year over a joke he told on social media in 2009.

So, it seems, it’s time for a liberal to be canceled over things said long ago, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has argued.

The Florida Republican has called on President Joe Biden to yank Atul Gawande, his nominee to an influential post at the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Rubio cited gruesome comments Gawande made about abortion in an online article back in 1998 as disqualifying for his position, where he would have considerable sway over America’s positions on family planning and reproductive health.

According to The Daily Signal, Gawande, now a professor at Harvard Medical School, wrote an article defending partial-birth abortion, which occurs when the doctor delivers the baby until his or her head “is outside the mother’s body, then punctures the back of the baby’s head and removes the baby’s brains.

In defense of this procedure, Gawande wrote, “Grossness is not a good objection. Lots of operations are gross — leg amputations, burn surgery, removal of facial tumors, etc. But that does not make them wrong.”

Continuing, he added that compared to dilation and evacuation procedures, wearing an abortion doctor essentially vacuums the baby out of the womb, “Partial-birth abortion is, if anything, less grotesque.”

“The fetus is delivered feet first. To get the large head out, the doctor cuts open a hole at the base of the fetus’s skull and inserts tubing to suck out the brain, which collapses the skull,” Gawande added. He further suggested that if partial-birth abortions are “too gruesome to allow,” then D&E abortions also could be banned as too gruesome.

“And that’s the inevitable next target for pro-life advocates,” Gawande wrote.

Gawande also argued that life should be defined as when the baby’s brain is functioning. “In the case of a fetus, it seems that what we want to know is whether it has a brain with the spark of consciousness,” he wrote. “For example, we don’t view anencephalics, babies tragically born with only a brain stem and not the rest of the brain, as living humans. Even for viable anencephalics, there’s no purpose to providing treatment. We let them die.”

Gawande further maintained in the article, “Whether the fetus is in the womb or out, big or small, does not matter, either.”

“But the size and appearance of the late-term fetus make us imagine that it has become a sensate, aware creature — and makes many supporters of first-trimester abortion uncomfortable with later-term ones.”

One can only wonder why.

Gawande ended that piece by noting, “There’s no good reason to single out partial-birth abortion–or any technique. From the pro-lifers’ standpoint, banning it will not actually save a single fetus. And for abortion-rights supporters, it is only an invitation to inconsistency.”

For his part, Sen. Rubio said in a statement, Gawande’s “defense of infanticide is disqualifying. Infanticide should be condemned, not celebrated, but Gawande’s radical, anti-life views are becoming mainstream in today’s Democratic Party.”

“President Biden should withdraw Gawande’s nomination and replace him with someone who is committed to upholding the agency’s mission of saving lives,” Rubio added.
