Team USA moved to 2-0 in World Baseball Classic Pool B play on Saturday night, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Great Britain 9-1 at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Despite an early power surge from the British squad, the American roster relied on a dominant pitching performance and a late-inning offensive barrage to secure the victory.

The game began with a jolt when Great Britain’s Nate Eaton drove the very first pitch of the night from starter Tarik Skubal over the wall for a solo home run. The play was briefly reviewed but confirmed by officials, giving Great Britain a 1-0 lead.

That narrow margin held for four innings, thanks in large part to Great Britain’s Trayce Thompson, who robbed former Dodgers teammate Will Smith of a home run with a leaping catch at the wall in the second inning.

The momentum shifted entirely in the bottom of the fifth. After Ernie Clement tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch from Andre Scrubb, Kyle Schwarber gave the U.S. its first lead with a 427-foot, two-run home run.

Gunnar Henderson extended the gap later in the frame, lining a hit into right-center field to drive in two more runs, capping a five-run outburst.

The U.S. added three more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by an Aaron Judge RBI single to left field that allowed Pete Crow-Armstrong to score. Henderson finished the night with four hits, including two doubles, spearheading a lineup that eventually wore down the British pitching staff.

On the mound, Skubal and the U.S. bullpen combined to retire 24 of the final 27 batters faced. Following the first-pitch homer, the American staff held Great Britain scoreless for eight consecutive innings and limited them to just three total hits while recording 17 strikeouts.

With the loss, Great Britain falls to 0-2 in the tournament. Skubal is expected to depart the national team and rejoin the Detroit Tigers following this appearance, while Team USA looks to maintain its perfect record as pool play continues.
