Using AI Without Rules? You’re Walking Into A Trap, Security Experts Warn

Everyone seems to be rushing to use artificial intelligence right now. From writing emails to fixing computer code, AI tools are changing how work gets done. But according to a new warning from Armor, a major cybersecurity firm, this speed comes with a hidden cost.

The company, which protects over 1,700 businesses worldwide, says that companies jumping into AI without a strict game plan are creating dangerous blind spots. These blind spots leave them open to data theft, lawsuits, and security threats they aren’t even looking for yet.

Chris Stouff, the Chief Security Officer at Armor, was direct about the urgency of the situation. “If your organization is not actively developing and enforcing policies around AI usage, you are already behind,” he said.

The main issue is that traditional security locks and alarms weren’t built to handle these new tools. Stouff noted that without clear rules about what information can be shared, companies are creating a “compliance liability” that many don’t realize they are carrying until it is too late.

The operational risks are already showing up in the workplace. One of the biggest problems is simple data leaks. Employees might paste sensitive customer details or secret company ideas into a public AI chatbot to get a quick summary. Once that information is fed into the public tool, the company loses control over it.

There is also the issue of “Shadow AI.” This happens when different departments start using their own unapproved AI tools without telling the IT or security teams. By the time anyone realizes what is happening, the company might have already violated privacy laws.

The situation is even more delicate for healthcare providers. Hospitals and health tech companies have to follow strict laws like HIPAA to protect patient privacy. If a healthcare worker accidentally puts patient data into an AI tool, it could trigger a mandatory breach investigation. Stouff pointed out that while the medical field is under huge pressure to use AI for efficiency, the laws haven’t fully caught up. He emphasized that these organizations need to define exactly who is responsible if an AI makes a mistake in clinical documents.

To help businesses fix these gaps, Armor released a five-part framework designed to bring transparency back to the workplace. The approach isn’t just about banning tools; it starts with simply finding out what software employees are actually using.

From there, the guidance suggests classifying tools by risk level and setting clear boundaries on which data types, like financial records or health info, are off-limits for AI. The goal is to weave these rules into the company’s daily routine and train employees so they understand that using AI safely is part of their job, not just a suggestion.
