Vice President JD Vance on Thursday brushed off what he called “crazy overreactions” to President Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland, warning European allies that the United States is prepared to act unilaterally if security concerns regarding the territory aren’t addressed.

Speaking at a press conference, Vance was pressed on how European leaders—many of whom have flatly rejected the notion that the semi-autonomous Danish territory is for sale—should interpret the administration’s overtures.

His response was blunt: “Take the President of the United States seriously.”

Vance indicated that the administration’s interest is driven not by real estate ambition, but by cold geopolitical strategy. He cited two primary factors fueling the White House’s focus: the island’s critical role in global missile defense systems and increasing interest in the region from “hostile adversaries.”

“What we’re asking our European friends to do is to take the security of that land mass more seriously,” Vance said. “Because if they’re not, the United States is going to have to do something about it.”

The Vice President declined to elaborate on what specific actions the U.S. might take, stating he would “leave that to” future discussions.

However, he confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with leaders from both Denmark and Greenland in the coming weeks to deliver the administration’s message directly.

The comments mark a significant escalation in rhetoric, shifting the conversation from a transactional purchase proposal to a matter of national security.

Vance urged observers to look past the media frenzy and focus on the strategic reality, signaling that the administration views the status quo in the Arctic as a vulnerability it intends to close—with or without European cooperation.
