Discussions emerge regarding the President’s perceived confidence and recent shifts in approval ratings.
Political commentators have offered differing views on President Donald Trump’s leadership style and its reception among the American public. During a Monday appearance on Fox News, Victor Davis Hanson suggested that President Trump embodies a distinctive American confidence that he believes has been less visible in national leadership in recent years.
Hanson’s remarks echoed sentiments previously expressed by former MSNBC host Chris Matthews, who stated he does not fully credit negative polling numbers for Trump, suggesting voters perceive him as a strong leader.
“To be honest with you, the country is moving towards Trump. These polls, they come out and show him not doing well — I don’t buy that,” said Matthews.

Hanson elaborated on this, asserting that Trump projects a sense of command that resonates with Americans seeking robust leadership. He drew a contrast with former President Joe Biden, citing instances where Biden appeared disoriented.
“Donald Trump is a dynamic, swashbuckling figure that represents this American confidence,” Hanson stated, adding that around Trump, “No one in their right mind… would ever get near him and whisper in his ear what to say. They know that he’s completely on his own.” Hanson suggested this independent approach fosters optimism and is “typically American in a way that we haven’t seen in about a decade or so.”
However, recent polling data presents a more complex picture of public sentiment. Gallup reported on Thursday that President Trump’s approval rating stood at 37%, with independent support at 29%. Conversely, pollster Matt Towery stated on Fox News that he believes Trump’s actual approval numbers are higher than what media reports indicate.

According to RealClear Politics, President Trump’s approval rating increased to 47.5% in June. This figure surpasses the approval ratings of former Presidents George W. Bush (45.9%) and Barack Obama (47.1%) at similar points in their second terms. This RealClear Politics data aligns with a Harvard/Harris poll that indicated a slight majority of voters view the economy as “strong.”
The increase in approval followed a 12.3-point jump in consumer confidence to 98.0 in May, marking the first rise in five months. Analysts have linked this surge to improved expectations regarding business conditions, job prospects, and income, a momentum that reportedly built after President Trump secured a trade deal with China on May 12.
