How about a Gator getting advice from a Nole? Florida Trey Young is about to start drills at the NFL Combine in front of NFL Scouts and says his friend and mentor Derwin James gave him great advice.

“Just know that when you walk in that room, know you’re the best safety in the country,” Dean said. “Don’t just say it; go out there and believe it.”

James is a 3x Pro Bowler with the Los Angeles Chargers, and Dean says he talks to James just all the time.

What Trey Dean did or didn’t do on the field for the University of Florida won’t matter now. Dean is projected to go either the second or third round in the NFL Draft and he knows he’ll have to step up his game. Dean is ready.

“In this (NFL) game you’ve got big fast receivers and big fast tight ends, and you don’t got to pay DBs to do one thing, you have one person to do a lot of things.”

Dean feels he’s that guy. Dean is a strong, hard hitter but had somewhat of an up-and-down career in Gainesville. Dean, who started at cornerback, moved to safety and feels that versatility will help him in the NFL.

“One thing I do well, I’m big, athletic and versatile, so being 6-3 and 211, that’s hard to find.”

Dean says every team in the NFL is in play for him and is anxious to start drills to show off his athleticism.

“I’ve talked to all 32 teams,” Dean said. “Just show up tomorrow .I did a good job at the Senior Bowl, and everything and that was just one stepping stone. I feel like I got a lot of other stuff, and you’re gonna see that tomorrow.”

As far as his Florida Gators and head coach Billy Napier?

“He’s a great coach, Florida will get back on track, don’t get me wrong,” Dean said. “Everything he really taught me was how to become a better man on and off the field. Billy Napier is a great coach and he’s got a lot of great coaches around him.”

The defensive MVP in the East-West Shrine Bowl has his best season at Florida in 2021 with 88 tackles. Even though 2022 was not quite as good, Dean got better as the season went on. Once again, none of that matters now. Dean is out to prove he can be a force at this next level.
