A potential threat of violence during Halloween trick-or-treating was averted Friday, thanks to the quick action of a vigilant teenager and fast-acting deputies from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).
Enzo Vargas-Giraldo, 15, was arrested at his home on Palmetto Ridge Drive around 4 p.m. Friday after he posted a menacing video on social media.
The video reportedly showed Vargas-Giraldo holding what appeared to be a homemade explosive device, and he was heard stating he intended to use the device Friday night during trick-or-treating, specifically warning that a particular neighborhood “is not safe.”
The threat was reported to CCSO immediately after being seen by another teenager on Friday afternoon. Detectives and deputies rapidly identified Vargas-Giraldo and responded to his residence. A subsequent search by the CCSO Bomb Squad located materials for making an explosive device in his garage. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also responded to the scene.
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk commended the teenager who reported the post, stating, “This young person did exactly the right thing and is to be commended for taking decisive and potentially lifesaving action.”
Vargas-Giraldo faces three felony charges:
- Manufacturing an explosive device with the intent to harm.
- Possessing a destructive device.
- Making electronic threats to do bodily injury (a second-degree felony).
CCSO is working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine if additional charges will be filed.
Sheriff Rambosk said, “Anyone who spreads fear in our community will face the consequences… our detectives will thoroughly investigate any threat and charge the person responsible.”
