Virginia Firearm Firefight: Senate Clears Path For Massive Semi-Auto Ban

Virginia is on the verge of implementing some of the most restrictive firearm regulations in the United States after the State Senate passed SB 273 on Tuesday. The 21-19 vote fell strictly along party lines, following the House of Delegates’ earlier approval in February.

The legislation now heads to the desk of Abigail Spanberger, who has previously voiced support for what she describes as “common-sense proposals.”

The bill, introduced by State Senator Saddam Salim, targets the sale of many assault-style weapons, specifically defining them as semi-automatic center-fire rifles or pistols. Under the new rules, individuals found in violation would face Class 1 misdemeanor charges, carrying a penalty of up to 12 months in jail.

Beyond the firearms themselves, the bill seeks to outlaw magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds. According to data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation cited by the NRA, such high-capacity magazines are widely used, accounting for nearly 75% of detachable magazines produced internationally.

The study further noted that roughly 46% of magazines are rifle-capable and hold more than 30 rounds.

If signed, Virginia would join states like California, New Jersey, and New York in having the nation’s strictest weapon bans.

Supporters of the measure argue the restrictions are a necessary step for public safety. Delegate Nadarius Clark stated the goal is to keep “communities safe from gun violence,” while Senator Salim posted on X that he had promised “real change” during his campaign and intended to deliver.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from gun rights organizations. Groups like Gun Owners of America and others have indicated they are prepared to challenge the measure in court if it becomes law.

This legislative push follows a period of heavy vetoes by the previous administration; former Governor Glenn Youngkin blocked numerous gun control efforts, though he did sign measures targeting devices that convert semi-automatics into fully automatic weapons.

Neither Salim nor Senate Minority Leader Ryan McDougle provided additional comments regarding the bill’s final passage.
