President Donald Trump’s net approval rating has reached its highest mark of the summer at 45% approval and 52% disapproval, representing a six-point recovery over the past four weeks despite ongoing tensions with Iran.
The shift, according to Morning Consult, comes as public sentiment regarding his economic performance shows modest improvement. The percentage of voters who strongly disapprove of his job performance has dropped to its lowest point since the spring.
Economic and living costs remain the primary focus for the electorate. According to recent polling data, 63% of voters want Washington focused on making energy cheaper—a five-point increase over the last month and the largest gainer among cost-of-living priorities. Lowering overall prices remains the top concern at 67%, followed closely by healthcare affordability at 66%.
Gas prices have increasingly become a focal point in midterm campaign advertising. However, as the Senate prepares for its August recess, legislative action remains centered on a stalled reconciliation package, a Russia sanctions bill, and a contested attorney general nomination, rather than the energy and affordability issues prioritized by voters.
Congressional Democrats currently hold a three-point lead on the generic midterm ballot, leading Republicans 46% to 43%. This margin remains unchanged over the past month, though the party’s lead on specific policy issues has narrowed.
Democrats retain advantages on key domestic topics, including the economy (D+3), healthcare (D+13), and energy (D+5), though these margins are slimmer than in the previous month. Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans have gained ground on national security, trade, and foreign policy matters.
While more voters disapprove than approve of the president’s job performance, current figures show Trump in a stronger position than ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, when Republicans faced larger deficits on the generic ballot before losing 40 House seats. Both major political parties currently hold net-negative favorability ratings among the electorate.
