POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A Polk County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Davenport on Monday afternoon after the pilot reported mechanical warning signs mid-flight.

Deputy Sheriff Pilot Dustin Johnson was en route to assist with a bomb threat investigation at Posner Park when he noticed warning indicators inside the cockpit of his Robinson R-66. READ: Bomb Threat Forces Evacuation At Posner Park Cinema In Davenport: Polk County Sheriff

According to official reports from the Sheriff’s Office, Johnson performed a precautionary landing on a patch of dry ground to ensure the safety of the aircraft. While initial reports suggested a hard landing, officials have since clarified that the touchdown was controlled and the helicopter remained intact.

However, the situation took a turn after the pilot reached the ground. Shortly after the landing, a heavy deluge of rain swept through the Davenport area. The localized downpour quickly flooded the field where the helicopter was parked, surrounding the aircraft with standing water.

Despite the sudden flooding, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that neither the pilot nor the Robinson R-66 sustained any injuries or damage during the incident.

The Polk County Agricultural Crimes Unit was called to the scene to assist in moving the helicopter. The unit loaded the aircraft onto a specialized trailer and transported it back to the PCSO hangar for inspection.

The Sheriff’s Office maintained that the pilot followed standard safety protocols and that the aircraft and the pilot are both in good condition.
