The United States government moved to aggressively choke off Iran’s primary source of funding today, rolling out a sweeping set of sanctions aimed directly at the regime’s oil trade with China.
In a significant escalation of the “Economic Fury” campaign, federal authorities targeted a major independent Chinese refinery and a sprawling network of nearly 40 different entities, including vessels and the management firms that keep them afloat.
This latest move by the Department of the Treasury is designed to dismantle what officials describe as a critical lifeline for Tehran. According to a press statement released on April 24, 2026, the primary goal is to disrupt the “illicit oil trade” that serves as the backbone for the Iranian regime’s revenue.
The U.S. maintains that these funds are directly funneled into regional destabilization and the financing of various proxy forces and terrorist groups throughout the Middle East.
“The United States is taking decisive action to disrupt Iran’s illicit oil trade, the Iranian regime’s primary revenue streams that fund its terrorism and destabilization of the region,” the statement read.

By blacklisting the Chinese refinery and the accompanying fleet of tankers, the U.S. is attempting to make it virtually impossible for Iran to move its crude oil without facing severe financial penalties.
This “maximum pressure” strategy is intended to hold the Iranian leadership accountable for what the Administration calls “regional aggression and threats to American interests.”
The sanctions come at a time when the Iranian economy is already struggling. U.S. officials pointed out that while the regime continues to seek ways to fund its “malign agenda,” the Iranian people are the ones bearing the brunt of domestic economic mismanagement and political repression.
The Treasury’s action is a clear signal to international markets that the U.S. will not look the other way as foreign refineries facilitate the sale of Iranian energy.
Moving forward, the U.S. vowed to “intensify economic pressure on Iran and the international network that sustains its illicit energy trade” as part of its ongoing strategic mission to curb Tehran’s influence.
