WATCH: Illegal Immigrant Shoots Off-Duty CBP Agent In Apparent Robbery Attempt In NYC

DHS releases footage; one suspect identified with prior arrests and deportation order.

An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent was shot Saturday night in what Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials are describing as an apparent robbery attempt in Fort Washington Park, Manhattan. The incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. while the agent was with a female companion.

DHS released footage of the incident, which shows an exchange of gunfire. The agent sustained a gunshot wound to the face but reportedly returned fire, striking one of the two assailants. The agent is currently hospitalized in stable condition.

According to DHS statements on social media, one of the alleged perpetrators has been identified as Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez. DHS stated that Nunez had previously entered the United States illegally and was apprehended and released in Arizona.

Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin further posted that Nunez is an “illegal re-entry and has a warrant from Massachusetts for kidnapping.” DHS also stated that this individual had prior arrests for felony 2nd and 3rd degree assault and an order of deportation.

“Suspect Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez is a national and citizen of the Dominican Republic. RE ENTERED and RELEASED under Biden— on April 4, 2023, the United States Border Patrol apprehended him at/near San Luis, AZ,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “This criminal has a criminal warrant in Massachusetts for kidnapping and had been charged with a series of offenses.”

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is currently investigating the incident. NYPD radio traffic indicated the agent was shot in the mouth.
