A months-long unexplained absence by Representative Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) has triggered open frustration within the GOP, as the party fights to pass conservative legislation with a razor-thin House majority. Kean, who represents a crucial swing district, has not cast a vote since early March, citing a vague “medical issue” but leaving Speaker Mike Johnson with virtually zero margin for error on the House floor.
While Kean recently secured an endorsement from former President Donald Trump and told the New Jersey Globe in May that his doctors expect a “full recovery,” his continued absence from the front lines has left his colleagues exposed. On Wednesday, Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) broke the silence, calling the lack of transparency and attendance a massive liability.
“Where is he?” Boebert demanded during a TMZ interview. “No, seriously. It’s embarrassing. We’re supposed to be the party that is against campaigning from the basement.”
Boebert didn’t hold back, pointing out that she has “worked my ass off to get re-elected and serve the people of my district,” while Kean has been completely MIA. She noted that while Republicans desperately need a working majority to block the progressive agenda, an empty seat does little good. “I mean, sure, we need a majority, but under these circumstances?” she asked.
The Colorado congresswoman blasted the double standard in Washington, noting that “no one calls out Democrats when they don’t show up,” a nod to the widespread proxy voting abuses under Nancy Pelosi during the pandemic. However, she argued that shouldn’t excuse Republicans from doing their jobs.
“I’m not saying that he’s dead,” Boebert said, demanding more transparency on his actual location. “But, I mean, come on — absent. Like where is the representation? It’s taxation without representation, is it not?”
Despite the sharp criticism, Boebert wrapped up by wishing her colleague a quick recovery, while leaning into the absurdity of the situation. Asked what she would say to Kean right now, she laughed and said, “Hi. It’s great to meet you. I’m Lauren Boebert.”
