Whistleblowers Target Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz For Retaliation Over Fraud To Terror Group

A deepening controversy involving pandemic-era fraud in Minnesota has taken a volatile turn, as an online group claiming to represent hundreds of state employees is publicly accusing Governor Tim Walz of ignoring early warnings and retaliating against whistleblowers.

The allegations come amid a new federal probe into whether millions in stolen taxpayer funds were siphoned to overseas terrorist organizations.

An X account, now operating under the name “Minnesota Staff Fraud Reporting Commentary,” claims to speak for 480 employees of the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). The group alleges they attempted to alert the administration to massive billing irregularities within the “Feeding Our Future” program but were met with suppression rather than support.

“We let Tim Walz know of fraud early on, hoping for a partnership in stopping fraud, but no, we got the opposite response,” the group posted. They explicitly blamed the Governor for the scope of the theft, stating, “Tim Walz is 100% responsible for massive fraud in Minnesota.”

The account, which was briefly suspended before being restored under a modified handle, described a workplace culture of fear, noting, “It’s actually quite stressful to tweet because we anticipate and expect retaliation. It’s the Tim Walz way.”

The Scheme and Terror Links

The accusations center on the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, which authorities say recruited individuals to open over 200 child nutrition sites.

While these sites claimed to be feeding thousands of children daily, prosecutors allege the organization produced fake attendance rosters and invoices to secure federal reimbursements.

David Gaither, a former Minnesota lawmaker, highlighted the brazen nature of the alleged billing. He pointed to the Safari restaurant in downtown Minneapolis as a prime example: despite having a seating capacity of only 35, the establishment claimed to serve more than 18,000 meals a day.

Federal authorities have indicted 86 people in connection with the scheme. According to federal sources speaking to NewsNation, 79 of those charged are of Somali descent.+

The investigation has escalated to the national level following reports that stolen funds may have left the country. Current and former federal sources indicated that a portion of the money was diverted to Somalia, specifically benefiting al-Shabaab, a terror group linked to al-Qaida.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on Monday that an investigation is underway.

“At my direction, [the Treasury] is investigating allegations that… hardworking Minnesotans’ tax dollars may have been diverted to the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab,” Bessent wrote on X, promising to share findings as the inquiry proceeds.

Administration’s Defense

Governor Walz defended his administration’s handling of the scandal, rejecting the narrative that his office was complicit or negligent. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Walz emphasized the judicial outcomes rather than the oversight failures.

“Certainly, I take responsibility for putting people in jail,” Walz said. He described Minnesota as a generous and well-run state with a AAA bond rating, arguing that such prosperity inevitably attracts bad actors. “Those people are going to jail.”

It’s unclear if anyone is in jail for the scheme.

Walz also warned against generalizing the crimes to the broader Somali American community—Minnesota is home to approximately 80,000 Somali Americans—calling such characterizations “lazy.”

Despite the Governor’s defense, the self-proclaimed DHS whistleblower group continues to post, insisting that the administration’s priority was silence rather than solutions.
