White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt launched a blistering attack on Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday, accusing him of neglecting serious election security issues in his state and refusing to adopt “commonsense election integrity measures.”

The exchange ignited after Newsom reposted a clip of Leavitt’s discussion with reporters on election fraud, captioning it: “They cheat and lie because they know they are going to lose.”

Leavitt fired back, telling the Governor to “stop tweeting at me and do your job,” and asserting that California has “among the worst laws for securing elections in the entire nation.”

Focus on Photo ID and Mail-In Ballots

Leavitt specifically criticized the lack of a photo ID requirement for voters in the state, despite her claim that “nearly 90% of Americans supporting photo ID laws.”

She also targeted California’s universal mail-in-balloting system, calling it “extremely vulnerable to fraud and abuse.” To support this, Leavitt pointed to the bipartisan 2005 Carter-Baker Commission on Federal Election Reform, which warned that “absentee ballots remain the largest source of potential voter fraud.”

She provided concrete figures from the 2024 election, stating that California mailed nearly 10 million mail-in ballots that were never returned.

Concerns Over Duplicate Registrations and Non-Citizen Voting

The Press Secretary also raised concerns about voter roll maintenance and local election policies.

  • Non-Citizen Voting: Leavitt noted that San Francisco allows non-citizens to vote in local elections (specifically Board of Education elections), which she claimed “creates a high risk of fraud in federal elections.”
  • Duplicate Registrations: She cited data from the 2024 election cycle, reporting that California had 2,178,551 duplicate registrations—representing 15.6% of total registered voters—and claimed seven counties completely failed to provide data on duplicate registrations.
  • Voter Roll Clean-up: Leavitt added that the state “only removed 378,349 registered voters for death (11.9%),” which she stated was “well below the national average.”

Leavitt concluded her remarks by challenging the Governor’s stance and demanding action on election reforms.
