White House Showdown: Trump To Meet Top Congressional Leaders As Shutdown Looms

Oval Office Talks Set for Monday as Government Funding Deadline Looms

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with the top four congressional leaders at the White House on Monday, a critical assembly as the deadline for a potential government shutdown draws near. The high-stakes meeting, confirmed by White House and congressional officials to the Tampa Free Press, will bring together leaders from both parties as time runs out to pass a spending bill.

Expected attendees include House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-SD, along with their Democratic counterparts, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY.

The development follows days of mounting tensions and public disputes over the looming funding expiration on September 30. The meeting announcement comes after President Trump abruptly canceled a planned discussion with Democratic leaders last Thursday, reportedly at the urging of Johnson and Thune, dismissing Democratic demands as “unserious and ridiculous.”

In a joint statement released Saturday evening, the Democratic leaders acknowledged the renewed invitation. “President Trump has once again agreed to a meeting in the Oval Office,” they said. “As we have repeatedly said, Democrats will meet anywhere, at any time and with anyone to negotiate a bipartisan spending agreement that meets the needs of the American people. We are resolute in our determination to avoid a government shutdown and address the Republican healthcare crisis. Time is running out.”

Republicans, however, have held firm, asserting that they will not make concessions to pass a short-term funding bill for seven weeks, maintaining that any substantive negotiations should occur during the appropriations process.

The urgency of the situation was underscored this week when the White House Office of Management and Budget instructed federal agencies to prepare mass firing plans in the event of a shutdown. Failure to pass or extend a spending bill before October 1 threatens the jobs of millions of federal workers.

In an attempt to restart negotiations, a Schumer aide confirmed that the Senate Minority Leader called Thune on Friday, “urg[ing] him to get President Trump to meet because the deadline for a government shutdown is fast approaching.” Senate Democrats are also planning a conference call on Sunday afternoon ahead of their return to Washington.
