WINDERMERE, Fla. — The Town of Windermere will see a shift in political leadership following the close of candidate qualifying on Friday, with Republican Andy Williams set to take over the mayor’s office.
Williams secured the position without opposition after the incumbent mayor, Democrat Jim O’Brien, declined to seek re-election. The transition marks the first time since 2019 that the office has been held by a Republican.

State party officials quickly pointed to the uncontested victory as evidence of changing political tides in Orange County, a region that has historically leaned Democratic.
“This Republican flip in Windermere underscores the reality on the ground in Florida,” said Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power in a statement following the qualifying deadline. Power cited the party’s growing voter registration advantage—now topping 1.4 million statewide—as a key factor in their strategy to contest seats in traditionally blue strongholds.
Williams will assume the role immediately following the transition, with the state party pledging support for his incoming administration.
