A Friday morning in Fond du Lac County turned into a nightmare when a two-year-old boy was shot and killed by his four-year-old sibling in the driveway of their own home.
The incident unfolded on April 10, 2026, at approximately 10:26 a.m. According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, a passerby called 911 after discovering that a young child had been shot at a residence.
First responders and deputies arrived within minutes to find a chaotic scene, immediately launching lifesaving efforts. Despite the arrival of a ThedaStar medical helicopter and the work of emergency crews, the injuries were too severe; the two-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the tragedy happened in a matter of moments. Preliminary reports indicate a parent had buckled three young children into a vehicle parked in the driveway.

The parent stepped back inside the house to grab a forgotten item, leaving the children alone for a brief period. During those seconds, a four-year-old child inside the vehicle discovered a loaded firearm in the center console. The gun discharged, striking the two-year-old sibling.
Sheriff’s investigators, working alongside the Medical Examiner’s Office, confirmed that the shooting was isolated to the driveway and that no foul play is suspected. The family is currently cooperating with the ongoing investigation. While the Sheriff’s Office noted that criminal charges could be forthcoming, those decisions will not be made until the comprehensive probe is complete.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a department chaplain and a crisis social worker were called to the scene to assist the family.
“The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” the department said in an official statement. “Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with them as they process this tragic loss.”
Authorities are using this heartbreak as a grim reminder for the community, urging all residents to “safely store firearms out of the reach of children at all times.” For now, officials are asking the public to respect the family’s privacy, and no further details regarding the identity of the family or the specific firearm involved have been released.
