Xavier Becerra Advances To California Gubernatorial General Election

Democrat Xavier Becerra has secured a spot in the general election for governor of California following a primary campaign centered on his decades of experience in public office.

Becerra emphasized his 35-year career in government—which includes roles as California’s attorney general and the U.S. secretary of health and human services—to pitch himself as the most qualified candidate in the crowded field.

“I am ready to lead the fight to uphold California’s promise to make sure we have the governance worthy of our gifts,” Becerra stated on election night.

After initially trailing in early polling, Becerra’s support increased in the final months of the race. During his campaign, he pledged that California would continue to legally challenge policies enacted by President Donald Trump. While serving as state attorney general, Becerra initiated more than 120 legal actions against the first Trump administration regarding immigration, climate policy, and other issues.

Opponents in the primary focused their scrutiny on Becerra’s tenure as health secretary, specifically pointing to the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 unaccompanied migrant children crisis. During that period, the Department of Health and Human Services managed shelters that faced criticism over living conditions. Concerns were also raised regarding the thoroughness of background checks on potential sponsors before children were placed in their care.

Becerra has outlined several policy goals if elected, stating he intends to declare states of emergency to address housing shortages and elevated energy costs, and to implement a freeze on home insurance rates.

California’s historical leadership has consisted almost entirely of white men. If he wins the general election, Becerra will become the state’s first Latino governor since the late 1800s.
