HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County is handing residents the keys to a cheaper, greener lifestyle this month as the Extension Service rolls out a diverse calendar of workshops designed to tackle rising costs and environmental hurdles.
Starting this week, locals can access a mix of in-person and virtual sessions that bridge the gap between academic research and everyday practical skills.
The May lineup covers a broad spectrum, ranging from backyard food production to sophisticated financial planning. According to the Extension Service, these programs focus on “research-based programs designed to help residents save money, live healthier lives, and care for Florida’s natural environment.”

For those looking to transform their outdoor spaces, the schedule kicks off with a virtual Composting Workshop on May 6, followed by a session on Container Gardening for Every Space on May 7. Gardeners interested in local ecology can attend in-person classes on Managing Beneficial Insects throughout mid-May or a dedicated native plant workshop on May 14.
Water conservation remains a high priority for the county, with specialized training available for Vegetable Micro-irrigation on May 14 and a Florida-Friendly Landscaping webinar on May 21 specifically focused on appropriate fertilization techniques.
The service is also targeting long-term stability through its financial wing. Residents can access “Financial Building Blocks,” a self-paced online course running all month, or book one-on-one financial education appointments for personalized guidance.
