THE BREAKDOWN: A 50-year-old Zephyrhills man remains in federal custody after falling for an undercover sting operation. Michael Joseph Vitoff faces up to life in prison after allegedly chatting online with a federal agent he believed was a 13-year-old girl and driving to Marion County to meet her.
PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – Michael Joseph Vitoff, a 50-year-old resident of Zephyrhills, is facing severe federal charges following a brief undercover operation by federal agents. A federal grand jury has indicted Vitoff on charges of attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity and attempted production of child sexual abuse material.
U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the indictment, which could put Vitoff behind bars for decades if he is convicted.
According to federal court documents, the entire sequence of events unfolded over just a few days, running from June 2 to June 5, 2026. Investigators state that Vitoff was using the internet to communicate with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl. However, there was no young girl on the other side of the screen. Vitoff was actually messaging an undercover special agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
During their online conversations, authorities allege that Vitoff actively pressured the supposed minor to create sexually explicit photos of herself and send them to him. Court records also state that Vitoff explicitly told the undercover agent that he wanted to meet up to engage in sexual activity.
The digital investigation quickly escalated into a physical takedown on June 5, 2026. Believing he was finally going to meet the 13-year-old girl, Vitoff traveled to a specific location inside Marion County. Law enforcement officers were waiting for him at the meetup spot, where he was arrested without incident. He has been held in federal custody since the arrest and will remain jailed as the legal process moves forward.
The potential penalties for these charges carry steep mandatory terms. If Vitoff is found guilty, the attempted enticement charge demands a minimum sentence of 10 years and carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. The second charge, attempted production of child sexual abuse material, carries an additional mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years.
The investigation was a collaborative effort handled by Homeland Security Investigations alongside the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Janette Swartzberg has been assigned to prosecute the case.
