POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A Lake Wales man was arrested Wednesday evening after a Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputy clocked him traveling at a staggering 121 miles per hour in a posted 60 mph zone on US Highway 27.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy conducting traffic enforcement near the intersection of US 27 and Peace Creek Road observed a black 2007 BMW 328I heading southbound at an extremely high rate of speed around 7:48 p.m.

The radar clocked the vehicle’s speed at 121 mph, more than double the legal limit.

A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver was identified as 27-year-old Marc-Anthony Jacquin Rodriguez of Lake Wales.

When questioned by the deputy about his excessive speed, Rodriguez reportedly claimed his vehicle’s transmission gets “stuck in fifth gear” and causes the car to accelerate rapidly.

Authorities noted that this is not Rodriguez’s first encounter with traffic violations. His record includes four prior red light citations, one previous speeding ticket, and eight instances of driver’s license suspension.
