The vehicle belonging to a Florida teacher who went missing in October was found in a body of water over the weekend.

Deputies say that Port Orange teacher Robert Heikka’s car was discovered in a canal along Pioneer Trail where the water level has recently dropped significantly.

The car was removed from the water Sunday, with one deceased occupant discovered inside.

“While positive ID has not officially been made, the Port Orange Police Department has been in contact with Mr. Heikka’s family. Our thoughts go out to the Heikka family and friends this evening,” said Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Heikka, a teacher at Creekside Middle School, was reported missing when he failed to show up for work on Oct. 26, 2020, and coworkers could not find him at his Waters Edge home in Port Orange.

Neighbors told Port Orange police they saw Heikka, then 70 years old, leaving his house the morning of Oct. 24, and bank records showed he made a normal transaction at an ATM in Brevard County.
