Amid a tidal wave of illegal immigration caused by President Joe Biden’s open-borders policies, more lucid Democrats are backtracking from their preferred political move: playing the race card.

The latest example comes from Florida, where Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell seeks to oust Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Mucarsel-Powell, a former one-term congresswoman, penned an op-ed in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel attacking Scott as an “extremist” who has imperiled national security by refusing to go along with a proposed bill that would allow nearly 2 million illegals into the country before the border is closed.

Maracusel-Powell lamented Border Patrol agents who are “overwhelmed” and underfunded and denied modern security equipment because of Republicans like Scott.

She complained that Scott and GOP lawmakers are refusing “critically necessary funding that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency needs to continue to operate.”

“Thanks to Scott, our Customs and Border Patrol and ICE agencies are still without support. Because Scott tanked essential funds in the bipartisan border deal, ICE is now preparing to release thousands of detainees and cut detention levels by the tens of thousands.”

As the Free Beacon noted, Marcusel-Powel’s emotional appeal to support immigration authorities carries the whiff of hypocrisy and political opportunism.

That’s because not so long ago, she branded them racists.

The Free Beacon noted that in 2018, Mucarsel-Powell ran for the House, seeking to become the first South American immigrant elected to the chamber.

In June 2018, she visited an ICE detention center. She called for illegals who had been convicted of “minor offenses” to remain in the country.

“There’s a lack of transparency and a definite racial bias that has to change,” Mucarsel-Powell told the Miami media at the time, after arguing that ICE, under former president Donald Trump, “seems to be arresting people left and right.”

“We’re facing a humanitarian crisis,” she claimed. “We’re seeing photos of children being kept in cages.”

The Free Beacon also reported that Mucarsel-Powell, in 2019, her first year in Congress, invited a left-wing activist named Thomas Kennedy to speak at a town hall event she held at Florida International University.

Kennedy, a member of Democratic Socialists of America, the group once claimed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was busted for getting out of line at an immigration protest rally dubbed “Abolish ICE: Florida.”

The Free Beacon noted that Marcusel-Powell’s campaign ducked a question on her past comments calling immigration agents racists. Instead, her campaign just ripped Scott “a con artist and a fraud” for tanking President Joe Biden’s favored border bill.
