With the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” just hours away, the betting landscape for the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is taking shape, with morning-line favorite Journalism holding his position atop the odds board, though money is starting to show for several contenders, including some potential longshots.

As of Saturday morning, Journalism, trained by Michael McCarthy, remains the horse to beat, listed at 3-1 morning-line odds. The bay colt has been impressive with a four-race winning streak, including a dominant performance in the Santa Anita Derby, solidifying his status as the top choice in many handicapper’s eyes. His favorable post position at No. 8, a gate with a strong history in the Derby, adds to his appeal.

However, the Kentucky Derby is notorious for producing unexpected winners, and the betting public is clearly exploring other options. Sovereignty, the Fountain of Youth Stakes winner, is currently the clear second choice at 5-1. Sandman, who took the Arkansas Derby, sits just behind at 6-1. Both colts have demonstrated strong form leading up to the Derby and are seen as legitimate threats to the favorite.

Beyond the top three, several horses are attracting attention and seeing their odds shift as race time approaches. Burnham Square, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes, is holding steady at 12-1 and is considered a live longshot by some experts. Luxor Cafe, an intriguing Japanese import, is currently at 15-1 and has generated buzz following his recent victories overseas and a notable workout at Churchill Downs.

Several horses are clustered in the 20-1 range, including Citizen Bull, East Avenue, Publisher, and Tiztastic, offering potentially rewarding payouts for bettors looking for value outside the favorites. A larger group of entrants are currently listed at 30-1 morning-line odds, representing the deepest longshots in the packed 20-horse field.

The fluctuating odds reflect the inherent unpredictability of the Kentucky Derby, a race where a multitude of factors – pace, track condition, post position, and plain old racing luck – can dramatically influence the outcome. While Journalism is the clear favorite, the history of the Run for the Roses suggests that opportunity knocks for many in the field.

Betting windows at Churchill Downs and simulcast locations across the country will remain busy throughout the day as final wagers are placed. All eyes will be on the iconicTwin Spires this evening to see if the favorite can deliver or if a longshot will wear the blanket of roses in the 151st renewal of this historic race. Post time is scheduled for 6:57 p.m. ET.
