As the Atlantic hurricane season looms, President Donald J. Trump has officially declared May 4th through May 10th, 2025, as National Hurricane Preparedness Week.
In a formal proclamation released today, the President underscored the critical importance of readiness and vigilance for communities both along the coastlines and inland.
The proclamation highlights the destructive power of hurricanes, storm surges, and flooding, emphasizing that while property loss is significant, the greatest concern remains the potential loss of life.
President Trump urged all individuals residing in at-risk areas to formulate comprehensive family evacuation plans and assemble essential supply kits containing non-perishable food, water, medicine, batteries, and other crucial items.

This year’s preparedness week carries added significance as August will mark the 20th anniversary of the devastating Hurricane Katrina, which left an indelible mark on the Louisiana Delta and Mississippi Coast. The President also acknowledged the more recent catastrophic impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which have shattered lives and communities across the nation.
Drawing upon his own experiences, President Trump recalled witnessing the resilience of communities firsthand, particularly in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. He lauded the “intrepid American spirit” evident in the compassion of volunteers and the extraordinary strength of survivors working to rebuild their lives.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to hurricane recovery efforts, President Trump highlighted an Executive Order aimed at empowering state and local authorities with a more significant role in resilience, preparedness, and rapid-response efforts. He emphasized the insight of local officials in making risk-informed decisions and deploying resources effectively.

“As hurricane season approaches, I urge every household to recognize the dangers of severe weather, assess their risk, and develop a comprehensive plan to ensure disaster preparedness,” stated President Trump in the proclamation. He called upon all Americans in hurricane-prone areas to take proactive steps to safeguard their families, homes, and businesses.
National Hurricane Preparedness Week serves as a crucial reminder for individuals and communities to take the necessary steps to protect themselves and their loved ones before a storm threatens. Residents are encouraged to visit Ready.gov and the National Hurricane Center’s website for valuable resources and information on hurricane preparedness.
