Tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan soared early Wednesday as India launched missile strikes across the border, targeting what it described as militant infrastructure.
Pakistani officials reported that the strikes hit at least three locations, resulting in the death of a child and wounding two other people.
According to the Associated Press, the pre-dawn strikes followed a period of heightened friction between the two nations in the wake of a deadly militant attack last month on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir. India has attributed the attack to Pakistan-backed militants, an accusation Islamabad has denied.

According to three Pakistani security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Indian missiles struck areas in both Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province. One strike reportedly hit a mosque in the city of Bahawalpur in Punjab, where a child was killed and a woman and man sustained injuries.

The Pakistani officials stated that their forces had launched retaliatory strikes, but did not provide immediate details of these actions.
“A little while ago, the Indian armed forces launched ‘OPERATION SINDOOR’, hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed,” the Indian government said in a statement.
The exchange of fire marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, raising international concerns about stability in the region.
