The United States announced a brokered ceasefire between India and Pakistan, effective immediately, following intense diplomatic efforts over the past 48 hours. The agreement also includes a commitment from both nations to commence talks on a wide range of issues at a neutral location.

The breakthrough was announced by the State Department Saturday, highlighting the engagement of U.S. Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio with senior officials from both countries.

These discussions included direct engagement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as well as External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.

“I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”

The ceasefire comes after a period of heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The agreement to hold talks at a neutral site signals both sides’ commitment to dialogue to resolve long-standing disputes.
