CLEARWATER, Fla. – Motorists who regularly access Congress Avenue from southbound US 19 must plan alternate routes starting this Friday, May 16th. The access point is slated to close temporarily for approximately seven days, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
The closure is weather-dependent and could potentially extend the duration.
The temporary shutdown is necessary to facilitate ongoing improvements to the heavily trafficked US 19 corridor in Pinellas County. The current work zone spans from State Road 580 (Main Street) northward to County Road 95.
During this week-long closure, drivers heading south on US 19 who wish to reach Congress Avenue will be required to follow a designated detour. The detour route will direct motorists to utilize State Road 586 (Curlew Road), then State Road 580 (Main Street), and finally Belcher Road to access Congress Avenue.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing measures to guide drivers through the altered traffic patterns. Advanced warning signs are being strategically placed along southbound US 19 leading up to the closure. Additionally, electronic message boards will be set up to provide real-time updates and directional information to motorists navigating the area.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution when traveling near the construction zone. Motorists must remain alert for construction workers and any potential hazards. Reduced speeds are advised to ensure the safety of both drivers and the work crews.
