Shawn Terry Demont Newby, 44, of Nashville, was sentenced yesterday to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced Acting United States Attorney Robert E. McGuire for the Middle District of Tennessee.

The sentencing stems from an incident on the evening of January 6, 2024, when Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) officers responded to a shooting at a WeGo bus station located at 3458 Dickerson Pike in Nashville. Investigation revealed that Newby discharged a firearm following a verbal altercation near the bus stop.

A security camera on the bus captured the incident, recording Newby speaking with the bus driver and identifying himself as “Shawn Newby.” The bus driver and other witnesses reported that Newby left the bus after the shooting.

Responding officers located Newby on a nearby sidewalk. As an officer approached, Newby discarded a Taurus, model PT-22, .22 LR caliber pistol onto the grass, where it was subsequently recovered by MNPD. Officers also found .22 caliber shell casings in the vicinity of the bus where the shooting occurred.

Court documents revealed that Newby has a prior history of felony convictions, including Voluntary Manslaughter, Reckless Endangerment with a Deadly Weapon, theft over $1,000, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm in Davidson County, Tennessee Criminal Court.

Acting United States Attorney Robert E. McGuire emphasized the importance of safety on public transportation, stating, “So many of our citizens use public transportation to get to school, go to work, and live their daily lives. They need to be able to do all of those things without fear of getting shot. Prosecutions like this hold shooters accountable and protect all of our community from random violence on public transportation.”

Following his five-year prison sentence, Newby will be placed on supervised release for a period of three years.
