A 72-year-old Arizona woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly shooting her 38-year-old son Saturday night during a heated argument over the volume of his video game. The son sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach but is expected to recover.
Hazel Benson was arrested Saturday night at her home near Higley Road and Main Street following the incident. Mesa Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting at approximately 8:50 p.m. and found Benson’s son with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to court documents, the dispute escalated after Benson reportedly became frustrated with the noise level from her son’s video game. Authorities confirmed to multiple media outlets that officers had been called to the residence earlier that evening for a service call related to the ongoing noise issues.
Benson allegedly told investigators that she fired a gun and then disposed of it in a canal.
She claimed the two had been fighting, and after her son went for a walk to “calm down,” he returned to find her blocking the door. Benson stated she shot her son as he lunged toward her with “his hands in fists.” She reportedly told police she was unsure if she fired once or multiple times.
