Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville said Thursday on ” The Daily Beast Podcast ” that Democrats shouldn’t “woo” Elon Musk back into the party despite the X CEO’s past support for Democratic candidates and significant financial contributions.
Musk, who has since endorsed and financially backed President Donald Trump’s successful 2024 campaign, would offer “nothing of value” to the Democratic Party, Carville argued.

The discussion arose when host Joanna Coles asked Carville if Democrats should try to regain Musk’s support, given the utility of his platform X and his recent statement about not investing more money in politics for the time being.
“No,” Carville firmly responded when Coles clarified she meant bringing Musk back into the Democratic Party.
When pressed on why, Carville questioned what Musk would bring to the table. “I mean, what does he bring? … Look at the damage he’s done to the federal government. Why do we want him?” Carville asked.
Coles acknowledged the value of Musk’s X platform but conceded Carville had a “fair point” regarding Musk’s role in government. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) claims on its website to have saved taxpayers an estimated $170 billion as of May 11, through various measures including terminating contracts, eliminating fraud, canceling grants, and cutting the federal workforce.

DOGE has notably reduced the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which had reportedly funded far-left initiatives abroad and indirectly supported extremist groups.
Coles interjected, “It’s just that he used to be a Democrat. Then he got embraced and suckered in by the Republicans.”
Carville’s blunt response: “Maybe he used to be smart and then he went crazy.”
Musk has faced considerable backlash from Democrats since his 2022 acquisition of Twitter, his endorsement of Trump, and his role in the Trump administration.
