August Egg Company of Hilmar, California, today announced a voluntary recall of approximately 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and brown certified organic shell eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination. This recall comes as part of an ongoing investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses.

The affected eggs were distributed from February 3, 2025, through May 15, 2025, with “sell by” dates ranging from March 4, 2025, to June 4, 2025, across California and Nevada. These products were sold at major retail locations including Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raley’s, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs.

Additionally, eggs distributed from February 3, 2025, through May 6, 2025, with “sell by” dates from March 4, 2025, to June 19, 2025, to Walmart stores in California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois are also subject to the recall.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, frail or elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare instances, Salmonella infection can lead to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis if the organism enters the bloodstream.

Consumers can identify the recalled eggs by checking the plant code number P-6562 or CA5330, printed on the carton or package, along with Julian Dates between 32 and 126. The affected retail eggs are packaged in fiber or plastic cartons.

The company stated that it has voluntarily diverted eggs to an egg-breaking plant for over 30 days, where they are pasteurized to eliminate any potential foodborne pathogens. August Egg Company is currently not selling fresh shell eggs.

Consumers who have purchased eggs with the specified plant codes and Julian dates are urged to return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. For further inquiries, consumers may contact August Egg Company at 1-800-710-2554, between 9 AM and 5 PM PT.
