In a massive effort to combat pet homelessness, animal welfare organizations across Florida are partnering with the national nonprofit Petco Love for the annual Florida MEGA Pet Adoption Event.

The three-day event is scheduled for June 27, 28, and 29 at participating Petco locations and local animal shelters, with the ambitious goal of placing 2,000 shelter dogs and cats into loving homes.

This large-scale initiative comes as Florida grapples with its ranking as 46th in the nation for saving the lives of shelter pets. According to 2024 data, 37,683 dogs and cats were euthanized in Florida shelters. This event aims to significantly reduce that number by uniting nearly 50 organizations across 31 counties.

Building on the success of the 2024 event, which saw 1,949 pets find new families, this year’s event will once again waive adoption fees at most locations. All participating pets will be spayed or neutered and current on their vaccinations, ready to join their new families.

Locally, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office / Animal Services will be a key participant, hosting adoptions at their facility at 19450 Oliver Street in Brooksville from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all three days of the event.

“There is nothing more powerful than the moment a shelter pet meets their new family and that’s the heart of this incredible statewide event,” said Susanne Kogut, President of Petco Love. “By uniting animal welfare organizations across Florida, we’re not only finding homes for pets, we’re creating thousands of new beginnings filled with hope, healing, and unconditional love. That’s the power of community, and that’s the power of love.”

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis echoed the sentiment, stating, “At the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, we believe in serving and protecting every member of our community including the four-legged ones. Partnering with Petco Love for this MEGA Adoption Event is an opportunity to give hundreds of deserving pets a second chance and help them find the loving homes they deserve. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of these animals and the families who welcome them.”

The Florida MEGA Adoption Event is powered by a significant investment from Petco Love to the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) and is facilitated by the JHS’s Florida Leaders in Lifesaving program.
