During a heated House Oversight Committee hearing on Thursday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) leveled a striking accusation against the Republican majority, claiming they are “anti-legal immigration.”
Her remarks came in response to questioning from Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) concerning the distinction between “immigrant and an illegal immigrant” during a discussion on “sanctuary” immigration policies with blue-state governors.

Ocasio-Cortez asserted that the Trump administration’s actions have deliberately worked to “end legal status in the United States,” citing the stripping of temporary protected status (TPS) from immigrants and efforts to revoke student visas.
She argued that the GOP’s focus on “illegal vs. legal immigration” is a distraction from what she characterizes as a broader assault on documented immigration.
This exchange highlights the deep ideological chasm between conservative and progressive lawmakers on immigration.
Conservatives often emphasize the importance of distinguishing between those who enter the country legally and those who do not, viewing strong border enforcement and adherence to existing immigration laws as paramount for national security and the rule of law.
